We’re excited to announce a new wayfinding project that will improve the visitor experience at Randall’s Island Park. The park is a premier recreational destination, attracting more than 1.7 million visitors per year to its 480 acres in the heart of New York City. Features include picnic areas, playgrounds, athletic fields and Icahn Stadium, a premier track and field stadium that hosts national and international events.
While Randall’s Island is accessible by car, footbridge, and public bus, there is a perception that is it is difficult to reach and confusing to navigate. As a first step in this wayfinding project, we will conduct user-research and audit the current wayfinding systems, both onsite and online, to gain insight into the existing conditions and perceptions. Once this analysis is complete, we will develop a series of recommendations and work with senior leadership and the Access task force, which is compromised of members from the Board of Directors to refine and develop the materials before taking it through the Public Design Commission approval process. Though a collaborative and participatory engagement process, we will be able to develop relevant design solutions for all visitors – pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.
Many thanks to the Randall’s Island Park Alliance (RIPA) for this exciting opportunity. RIPA, a public-private partnership, was founded in 1992 to manage and develop Randall’s Island Park. In this capacity, RIPA works in close coordination with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, the New York City Department of Transportation, and MTA Bridges and Tunnels to execute their mission.
