In time for the new academic year, we just returned from Philadelphia to review the installation of a new exterior signage system at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Like many urban educational institutions, PAFA’s unique buildings- one, a 1871 Victorian museum and the other, a newly-acquired former automobile factory- do not lend themselves to a traditional campus visual identity. We were able to build a visual identity through wayfinding by activating the shared plaza and extending the system to the main facade facing the Vine Street Expressway.
