This month we are revisiting and highlighting the key principles that Katie Osborn, Principal and Wayfinding Strategist of Via Collective, outlined in the article published November 2023 by Transform Magazine.
MORE THAN SIGNS
Successful wayfinding programs the importance of integrating customer experience, universal design, and inclusive design principles into wayfinding systems. Successful wayfinding is more than static signage; it involves a cohesive experience across architectural landmarks, digital services, printed materials, and customer service.
BE CONSISTENT
Wayfinding systems should consistently reflect brand identity and create a trustworthy, comfortable environment by aligning graphic elements like language, typeface, and color across all touchpoints. Understanding visitor needs and ensuring compliance with ADA standards are foundational, but Osborn highlights going beyond these basics with adaptable solutions such as color-coding, audible signs, and wayfinding apps.
DESIGN FOR ALL
Osborn also discusses the growing role of universal and inclusive design, which cater to diverse visitor needs. Universal design provides a single, broad solution, while inclusive design offers multiple options, accommodating a wide range of abilities, languages, and cultures. Integrating these principles from the start ensures wayfinding systems are visitor-centered, enhancing navigation and overall experience.
