MTA New York City Transit Enhanced Station Initiative
Wayfinding Strategy & Design
In the spring of 2016, Governor Cuomo funded the Enhanced Station Initiative project, a $27 billion, five-year MTA Capital Program to renew and expand the MTA network. Renovations of 35 subway stations throughout the five boroughs included areas of Penn Station and Grand Central. The program integrated signage through seamless architectural approaches, consolidated information, and created information touch points that supplied up-to-date and on-the-go information. Additionally, improved wayfinding allowed customers to navigate stations confidently and provided digital signage with real-time updates including train arrival-time clocks at subway entrances. Our approach increased information access, ease of passenger flow, and reduced station signage “clutter” by an average of 35% per station.
