Via Collective is thrilled to announce that we will continue to work on the Penn Station Critical Improvements project (Phase 1) as part of the Skanska-AECOM design-build team. In this capacity, Via Collective will implement the wayfinding design and strategy developed during the schematic design phase of this project, for both the temporary and permanent signage.
The launch of this project was announced by Governor Cuomo in September 2018, after many years of debate about how to improve Penn Station. It is the first phase of work that will begin on the Long Island Rail Road Train Hall and will include a new entrance at the corner of 33rd Street and 7th Avenue. This portal will provide a direct access to the concourse level, facilitating ease of navigating the station for tens of thousands of passengers.
In close collaboration with the portal architect Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, Via Collective designed the landmark signage that is integrated into the canopy entrance. We also developed the strategy to provide temporary wayfinding signage during the 18-month construction phase.
The new entrance is scheduled to open at the same time as Moynihan Train Hall on 8th Avenue, and will be followed by Phase 2 of the Penn Station Critical Improvements project – the expansion and renovation of the LIRR concourse.
