Grand Central Madison

Wayfinding Signage

The creation of the new Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) terminal, spanning from 42nd Street to 48th Street below Madison Avenue, will serve approximately 160,000 LIRR customers daily. Research has shown that 40% of customers arriving at Penn Station head east upon arrival, confirming the need for a direct, “one-seat” ride into Grand Central Terminal. The extension will reduce congestion at Penn Station, transfers at Jamaica Station, and overcrowding on the 7 subway line. The overall wayfinding and signage program was adapted from the original Grand Central Terminal signage and included 24 sign types across four categories: informational, directional, electronic, and ADA.
