New York State Canal Corporation, Reimagine The Canals

Branding and Signage Guidelines

Inspired by the 2020 Reimagine the Canal Task Force report, the New York Canal Corporation, a subsidiary of the New York Power Authority (NYPA), undertook a project to update branding and wayfinding across 524 miles of trails along the Erie, Champlain, Oswego, and Cayuga-Seneca canals. The initiative includes two new brand identifiers—one for marketing and tourism, and another for trail signage—along with comprehensive guidelines to ensure consistent use across the system. Via Collective, in collaboration with NYPA, STUDIO V Design + Planning, and Moey, conducted site analysis, content development, and design work to create a cohesive, modern signage program, including vehicular, pedestrian, regulatory, and interpretive signs. The guidelines provide a unified visual identity, enhance the sense of place along the Canal Corridor, and supply municipalities, fabricators, and facilities teams with specifications for sign design, fabrication, and installation.
