The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), part of the State University of New York, celebrated a major milestone on October 23, 2025, with the grand opening of the Joyce F. Brown Academic Building. Named in honor of FIT President Joyce F. Brown and her 27 years of transformative leadership, the building stands as a bold testament to her lasting influence on the college and its vibrant creative community.
Via Collective is proud to have contributed to this project since 2016, leading the implementation of the building’s wayfinding and signage program across interior and exterior spaces. Open sightlines, abundant natural light, and thoughtful vertical circulation make navigating the building effortless, connecting students and visitors seamlessly to the larger campus. Our team worked closely with SHoP Architects, the FIT facilities team, and DANSY stakeholders to ensure every element was intuitive, visually engaging, and fully integrated with the building’s modern design.
Located in the heart of Manhattan’s Garment District, the 10-story, 100,000-square-foot building—designed by SHoP Architects—serves as a dynamic hub for students, faculty, and industry alike. More than a classroom space, it was conceived as a gateway to the existing mid-century modern campus, creating a fresh identity for FIT while showcasing the school’s energy and creativity to passersby, visitors, and the students themselves.
Inside, the building offers 26 energy-efficient classrooms and studios, administrative offices, and the largest campus knitting lab in the nation. A full-floor student commons under a soaring 20-foot ceiling encourages collaboration and community, while sustainable design features position the building to achieve LEED Gold certification—demonstrating FIT’s commitment to innovation, creativity, and environmental stewardship.
Being part of the Joyce F. Brown Academic Building has been an incredible honor for Via Collective. From planning to final installation, we helped create a space that not only supports world-class learning but also celebrates FIT’s energy and influence. The project not only supports world-class learning but serves as a new model for how architectural and wayfinding design can celebrate civic presence and educational energy in a dense urban core. This landmark project will inspire generations of students and stand as a vibrant symbol of creativity at the heart of New York City’s Garment District. We look forward to contributing this expertise to future collaborations.
