Mentorship and Entrepreneurship

by | May 8, 2025 | Collective Insights

Recently, our founder and Principal Wayfinding Strategist , Katie Osborn, had the opportunity to speak at the Parsons School of Design Creative Consulting Club and the Hunter College Graduate Urban Planning Studio about creating Via Collective and life as an entrepreneur.

She recounted her journey from graphic designer to founder and design strategist, spoke about the challenges she encounters while building a business, and shared advice for those considering starting their own ventures. These speaking engagements allow Katie to offer valuable perspectives on what it takes to thrive as a successful professional—particularly in a field where design intersects with user needs, technological innovation, and strategic thinking.

In today’s dynamic landscape, where many individuals are venturing into entrepreneurship and striving to carve out their own paths, mentorship has become more crucial than ever. Successful mentorship transcends simple guidance—it delivers invaluable knowledge, motivation, and a strong support system, offering shared experiences that serve as rich learning opportunities for growth. At its core, effective mentorship thrives on open communication and clear, defined goals, building trust and fostering a meaningful, growth-focused relationship between mentor and mentee. Mentors provide essential guidance in overcoming challenges, empowering mentees to make informed decisions and develop new skills. As role models, they instill confidence and support mentees in reaching their goals. Above all, mentors create a nurturing environment that helps mentees navigate obstacles with resilience and build lasting self-esteem.

Effective mentorship equips mentees with valuable insights, expert guidance, consistent support, and essential resources, leading to increased knowledge, sharpened skills, and greater confidence. Additionally, mentees have the opportunity to expand their professional networks and form meaningful relationships with experienced professionals. Mentorship is mutually beneficial, as mentors also gain personal fulfillment from sharing their expertise, making a positive impact, contributing to others’ growth, and often gaining fresh perspectives from their mentees in return.

The story of Katie’s journey in creating Via Collective underscores the importance of mentorship in the entrepreneurial adventure. Whether you’re a founder like Katie or someone exploring new opportunities, having a mentor can make all the difference. It’s through the sharing of knowledge, experiences, and support that we not only overcome challenges but also thrive in our personal and professional lives. Mentorship is a two-way street, where both parties grow and learn from each other. As more people venture into starting their own businesses, having the right guidance and connections can turn aspirations into success. With the right mentorship, we all have the potential to reach new heights and create a lasting impact in our fields.
